Embassy of India continues to provide Miscellaneous Consular Services through Postal mail/shipping.

  1. Download the Miscellaneous Application formand fill it up carefully. Each applicant is required to fill up a separate a form and affix their photograph.
  2. The Embassy does not prescribe any specific format for PoA / Affidavit and could be as per applicant’s requirements either on plain paper or Indian Stamp Paper (Embassy does not provide Stamp Papers).
  3. All applicants who are Indian nationals must ensure that their signature on PoA / Affidavit matches with the signature in the current valid passport. In case signature differs, the documents would be sent back, to be signed again, as in the passport.
  4. After the applicants sign POA and affix one current passport size photograph on the last page of the PoA, the PoA needs to be signed and witnessed by two individuals (other than immediate family members) with their full names and addresses clearly mentioned. After completing the above, POA may be notarized.
  5. Applicants may submit the original and a photocopy of the notarized PoA / Affidavit for retention by the Embassy for its record.
  6. In case of applicants of other nationalities, they may first get the PoA apostilled by the US State Department/Authorities. Embassy will attest the PoA for such categories of applicants only after those are apostilled. However, there is no need for PoA to be apostilled for OCI/PIO card holders. Such applicants may follow the same procedure for Indian nationals and enclose a notarized copy of OCI/PIO while applying.
  7. Apostille of POA is done at the office of the Secretary of US State where the applicant resides e.g. by Virginia state for those residing in Virginia.
  8. Applicants may attach a Notarized photocopy of any of the following documents as proof of residence: US Driving License, Utility Bill, Lease Agreement, State Identity Card or Mortgage Deed.
  9. Those applicants who hold Indian passportmay provide notarized copies of the first and last pages. Photocopy of the document showing valid US Visa Status.
  10. Other nationals may provide the notarized copy of the Passport bio-pages and pages with the applicant’s signature, and ensure that they sign their passport, at the space provided for the same and then take the copy and get it notarized.
  11. PoA of persons who are mentally incapacitated will not be accepted. Such cases will be entertained only if the applicant holds a notarized judicial order of guardianship of such person who is the main executor of the PoA.
  12. Fee:For PoA: A fee of US$20.00 (Twenty Only) per executant and an additional fee of US$2.00(Two Only) per executant towards Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF). For affidavit relating to property : A fee of US$20.00 (Twenty Only) and an additional fee of US$2.00(Two Only) per application towards Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF). For affidavit other than property : A fee of US$10.00 (Ten Only) and an additional fee of US$2.00(Two Only) per application towards Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF). The fees may be paid in two separate money order/cashiers’ cheque, drawn separately towards fee and ICWF, in favor of Embassy of India, Washington DC.
  13. Processing time: Ten working days from the date of receipt of postal mail at the Embassy. This is subject to submission of all requisite documents by applicant(s).
  14. Please send in the application after completing the above formalities, enclosing a trackable pre-paid self-addressed return mailing envelope to: Consular Section, Embassy of India, 2536 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington DC 20008.
  15. Incomplete applications will be sent back indicating the requisites to complete those.

How to Apply by Mail:

Follow the same procedure to fill up the application and enclose the same required documents as detailed above in the section ‘how to apply in person’ and send in the application enclosing a trackable pre-paid self-addressed return mailing envelope. Incomplete applications will be send back indicating the requisites to complete those.

Fee: A non-refundable fee of US$20.00 (Twenty Only) per PoA and an additional fee of US$2.00(Two Only) per application towards Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF). For joint PoA, each additional applicant will have to pay a fee of US$20.00 (Twenty Only). The fees may be paid only as money order/cashiers’ cheque, drawn separately towards and ICWF, in favour of Embassy of India, Washington DC.

Processing time:Ten working days from the date of receipt of postal mail at the Embassy. This is subject to submission of all requisite documents by applicant(s).

--> Applicants while forwarding applications by postal mail for this service may send only notarized copies of Passport and address proof. No originals required to be sent by post. The rest of the directions remains the same as listed below

Indian nationals who are applying by mail must get the POA witnessed, signed and notarized and then follow the same procedure to fill up the application and enclose the same required documents as detailed above in the section ‘how to apply in person’ and send in the application enclosing a trackable pre-paid self-addressed return mailing envelope.

Other nationals while applying by mail must follow the same procedures as stated at Sl No. 6 and then enclose all documents as detailed in the section ‘how to apply in person’.

Incomplete applications will be sent back indicating the requisites to complete those.
