Chinese New Year is also called Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, it is a Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year according to the traditional Chinese calendar.
Chinese New Year is based off the lunar calendar and starts on the new moon that appears. For 2023 Chinese New Year will be on 22nd January.
The celebration begins on the New Year’s Eve and lasts for about 15 days.
It would be nice to have all that time off, but today most people get around 3-7 days off for the holiday.
Since the lunar calendar and solar calendar are different lengths every few years an extra month is added into the lunar calendar, and it is also why Chinese New Years falls on a different day each year.
There are some myths, stories, and customs associated with Chinese New Year.

Chinese culture has many superstitions, and they believe we should greet each other with nice and lucky phrases during the New Year. Family members, friends, neighbors, and even strangers will greet each other with nice/lucky Chinese New Year greetings, wishing them good luck in the year to come.
In order to get red envelopes/packets, children are taught to bow to their parents, relatives, and elderly, and recite many different new year greetings.
The most common greeting is 新年快樂, this phrase directly translates to “Happy new Year”. Another common greeting is 恭喜發財”, it means “Wishing you prosperity and wealth.”
